PILIBHIT: Seven persons were booked by the city police on Tuesday night, following the orders of the chief judicial magistrate, for allegedly duping an 84-year-old woman to the tune of Rs 40 lakh on the pretext of buying a residential plot in her name.

SHO Harish Vardhan Singh of Pilibhit

Kotwali

police station said that

Mohammad Wasim Khan

, the main accused, and six others have been booked under

IPC

sections 420 (cheating and dishonesty), 406 (criminal breach of trust), 147 (rioting), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (intentional insult) and 506 (criminal intimidation).

The victim, Aulanga

of Awas Vikas colony in Pilibhit city, said that she is a widow and a pensioner who had rented her house to Mohammad Wasim Khan and six others of Hathikhana locality three years ago. Then, she shifted to

Greater Noida

. Later, on the pretext of buying a residential plot in her name and constructing a new house for her, the accused collected an amount of Rs 40 lakh from her and convinced her to sell her house to them, after assuring her that they will invest the money in constructing a "new and comfortable house" for her.

She sold her flat to them for Rs 28 lakh and also registered the title deed in their favour on January 13, last year. Of the total sale value, a sum of Rs 6.15 lakh was promised to be paid after a few months, she said. However, the accused deceived her and purchased land in their names.

When she demanded them to return her money, she was abused, threatened and beaten up by the accused, the victim alleged.

The 84-year-old said she filed several written complaints to Pilibhit Kotwali police station as well as the superintendent of police but to no avail. Her case was taken up only after she knocked at the door of the judicial court, she said.
