BAREILLY: Samajwadi Party (SP) chief and former UP CM Akhilesh Yadav, while addressing an election rally in support of party candidate Praveen Singh Aron in Bareilly on Sunday, asserted that “the decision to change candidates is an internal matter for the party”. Yadav’s remarks come amidst speculation regarding seat changes in Shahjahanpur and Moradabad.

He also took a swipe at the BJP, remarking, “Your concern should not be about the change in party seats of SP, but rather that BJP leaders are pulling each other down.”

During the rally, Yadav also took aim at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying, “The BJP leader came to Bareilly, but his visit was limited to just 1 km. They have put up hoardings of the double engine govt, but one of its engines is already missing.”

Yadav further criticised the BJP on issues such as frequent paper leaks, the guarantee of women’s safety, and youth unemployment, while urging the people of Bareilly to cast their vote for SP this year for a promising future.

Meanwhile, during the event, SP leader Haider Ali staged a dharna, citing the absence of Azam Khan’s photo from the main banner of the conference stage.

Haider told TOI, “I felt that it was an insult to the Muslim leaders of the party.” When asked, Akhilesh Yadav clarified to TOI, “Azam Khan’s photo is in all SP party offices,” refusing further comment. BJP has nominated Chhatrapal Gangwar for the Bareilly LS seat.
