The gruesome crime took place when Geeta Devi was asleep with her granddaughter Kalpana at their residence in Hayat Nagar village in Budaun district on Friday night. Police said the accused were upset since the child's parents had married against their wishes about 10 years ago.

An FIR was registered under sections of murder, and a team was formed to apprehend the accused.

SHO (Alapur) Dhananjay Singh told TOI: "Ramnath and Prempal are from the same community. Prempal's daughter Asha Devi had eloped with Ramnath's son Vijay Kumar. The couple is now living in Chennai, where they work as skilled labourers. Their daughter Kalpana was living with her grandmother since she was six months old.
