A tale of two cities: Bengaluru or Hyderabad who wins the battle of boomtowns?
The long-running competition between the two cities has played out through claims and counterclaims over the years, and now the rivalry has hotted up. The WeAreCity 2026 Report released by UnboxingBLR & How India Lives at the Indiaspora forum attempts to ground that debate in data
The competition between India’s Silicon Valley and Charminar City rarely stays confined to business metrics; it spills into food, culture and everyday life. On Wednesday, the launch of ‘A Tale Of Two Cities’ report turned that familiar contest into a more measured exchange, with former Infosys CFO TV Mohandas Pai and badminton great Pullela Gopichand making a strong pitch for their cities.
Yet, in a moment of candour, both acknowledged what draws them across the divide: for Pai, it is Hyderabad’s warmth, while for Gopichand, it is Bengaluru’s trees and no-frills darshini breakfasts. The report shows a competition that’s shifting, with Hyderabad closing gaps even as Bengaluru retains its lead in several areas.
Two cities, one engine
Bengaluru and Hyderabad are emerging as key drivers of India’s economy. Between 2019 and 2024, they accounted for about 53% of prime office space added across the top seven cities, nearly half of new domestic flight movements, and 40–50% of entry-level hiring in major sectors. In the last financial year, they contributed one in four new companies among the top eight cities, with growth trends that rival Delhi and Mumbai.
Where bengaluru leadsBengaluru continues to dominate startups. Between 2020 and 2024, it drew $42.3 billion in funding, far ahead of Hyderabad’s $1.3 billion. The gap widens in AI, where funding is about 72 times higher. It also leads in formal employment, patents, high-end tech roles, and Global Capability Centres, ranking 14th globally in Startup Genome in 2025.
Hyderabad closing gap in office space
Hyderabad is closing gaps. It added 66 million sqft of Grade A office space in five years, close to Bengaluru’s 69 million, with rents now only about 15% lower. It has added more GCC employees in this period and matched Bengaluru in new company formation in 2024–25. Housing remains more affordable.
Late-night commutes higher in hyderabadSpending patterns diverge. Hyderabad focuses on housing, loans and essentials, while Bengaluru leads in discretionary spends. Work hours differ too: Hyderabad sees more late-night and weekend commutes, while Bengaluru’s workforce is concentrated in morning hours.
