On Friday, at Viveknagar in Bengaluru, G Thangamani, 48, set herself ablaze at her Ejipura residence after a woman she worked for accused her of stealing a gold bracelet.

Police said Thangamani had been working at Dr Sandhya’s house in Viveknagar for the past 12 years. Sandhya had filed a police complaint recently in which she suspected Thangamani. Her family said two persons claiming to be cops had arrived at their home to question Thangamani. Hours later, she killed herself.

On December 17, K Rajesh, 20, a farmer from Jinnapura Tanda in Koppal hanged himself from a tree in their paddy farm, soon after a hotel owner’s relative accused him of stealing a matchbox. As was their routine, Rajesh and his father Krishnappa went to their field around 3am. On reaching there, Krishnappa realised he had forgotten to bring a matchbox to light the kerosene lamp. Rajesh rushed to a nearby hotel run by a person called Buddappa.

“As Buddappa wasn’t at the counter, Rajesh decided to take a matchbox and inform him later. However, Buddappa’s relative Shekarappa saw Rajesh and stopped him. Two other women joined Shekarappa and accused Rajesh of stealing,” police said.

They added that although the matter was resolved with Krishnappa apologising to Buddappa, Rajesh was upset and committed suicide the same morning. Cops booked Shekarappa, Lakshmi and Shantha for abetting suicide.
