BENGALURU: A day after the government suspended two engineers in connection with construction of a road passing through Hosakerehalli Lake, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) chief commissioner Tushar Giri Nath said the civic agency would conduct a detailed inquiry to find out why and how the structure was built.

Recently, deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar directed Giri Nath to suspend the officials responsible for building the road on waterbody. The BBMP had prepared a detailed report and forwarded it to the government.

Based on the report, the urban development department suspended HS Megha, executive engineer (solid waste management, BBMP), and Shilpa, assistant engineer (lakes), on Monday. Giri Nath told media on Tuesday that the government has suspended the two engineers pending inquiry. "We need to verify documents related to the work. We will hold probe and submit a report to the government."

According to another BBMP official, a bund was required for the movement of vehicles engaged in the then ongoing work to build a retaining wall for the lake and install a 4-metre-wide sewage pipeline. But the bund was huge compared to the required level, so the extra one was cleared, he added.

In the last week of March, netizens took to Twitter to blame BBMP and the government for allegedly laying the road in the middle of Hosakerehalli Lake to access a nearby layout. PN Ravindra, BBMP special commissioner (projects), visited the spot on March 23 and prepared a report. As per the suspension order, a contractor had constructed the road unnecessarily, while Megha and Shilpa allegedly failed to prevent it. They also failed to obtain a no-objection certificate from the Karnataka Tank Conservation and Development Authority to conduct work in the lake, the order said.
