Bengaluru beautician accuses astrologerof rape under guise of rituals

Bengaluru: A 35-year-old south Bengaluru woman has accused an astrologer of sexual exploitation under the guise of spirituality.She lodged a complaint with Chennammanakere Achukattu police on April 27, claiming Mohan Kumar J, raped her.He is also accused of luring women with promises of solving personal and business problems through poojas and "diksha."According to the complainant, the self-styled astrologer would gain the trust of families by claiming he could offer solutions to their troubles.Mohan contacted the complainant, who runs a beautician training centre, over the phone on Jan 1 last year, and visited the centre the next day to enrol his sister. He advised the complainant and her husband to perform a few rituals to improve her business.The woman said he took her to Pyramid Valley in Ramanagara district on Jan 30 and misbehaved with her. Later, he took her to Chamundeshwari temple in Mysuru on Feb 8 and then visited Nimishamba temple. While returning, he tried to rape her, and when she resisted, he threatened to harm her family through black magic, she said.After two days, he visited her residence on the pretext of giving diksha. He sent her husband and son to offer prayers to a tree for one and a half hours. While her husband and son went to a park, Mohan allegedly raped her. He also took her to a village for two days and abused her. The complainant said that when she had an infection, Mohan took her to a hospital.Mohan also took money from her for performing poojas. While sexually exploiting her, he would threaten her, saying he could cause her husband's death, she claimed.He also advised her husband to run a hotel, and during his absence, he allegedly abused her. The woman said she attempted to kill herself, but her family members advised her to lodge a complaint.A senior police officer said a case has been registered under BNS Sections 64 (punishment for rape), 75 (sexual harassment) and 351 (criminal intimidation). Mohan has gone incommunicado, and efforts are on to nab him, the officer added.
