DPR Tender Floated for Tumakuru Metro Extension

BMRCL has officially floated a tender to prepare the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for extending the Bengaluru Metro’s Green Line all the way to Tumakuru. The proposed 59.6-km stretch marks a major shift in Karnataka’s transit planning, pushing the Metro network beyond city limits for the first time. The DPR tender has a submission deadline of November 20 and carries an earnest money deposit of ₹4.5 lakh.

Karnataka’s First Intercity Metro Project Takes Shape

With the Bommasandra–Hosur Metro line moving slowly, the Tumakuru extension is now on track to become Karnataka’s first-ever intercity Metro corridor. The project is being advanced under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model after the cabinet approved the feasibility study submitted in May.

A 60-km Green Line Stretch to Boost Connectivity

The new alignment will extend from Madavara (near BIEC) and continue through major emerging zones. At nearly 60 km, this will be one of India’s longest Metro corridors, aligning with the state’s vision of expanding high-capacity transit beyond Bengaluru’s urban core.

25 Elevated Stations Planned Across Key Hubs

The feasibility report proposes 25 elevated stations along the corridor. The route will cover strategic locations such as Neelamangala, Dabaspete, and Kyathasandra before reaching Tumakuru. These areas have grown into industrial and residential clusters that need faster, reliable mobility.

15,000 Passengers Per Hour Projected in One Direction

BMRCL estimates that the new line will serve nearly 15,000 passengers per hour per direction, significantly reducing road dependency. With trains expected every 4–5 minutes, the Metro could help ease congestion on Tumakuru Road, one of the most traffic-choked corridors around Bengaluru.

Tumakuru’s Rise as an Industrial Suburb Drives Demand

Tumakuru is rapidly evolving into an industrial satellite town with factories, logistics parks, and SEZs coming up. Industry bodies, commuters, and government departments have long demanded high-speed connectivity to Bengaluru, making the Metro extension a key economic enabler.

Faster Commutes vs Current Road and Rail Options

A road journey from Bengaluru to Tumakuru currently takes nearly two hours, often longer during peak congestion. Rail is faster but suffers from limited frequency. The proposed Metro line aims to provide a high-frequency, predictable, and climate-friendly alternative for thousands of daily commuters.

BMRCL Says Bid Scrutiny Will Take 5–6 Months

A BMRCL official confirmed that post-bid scrutiny will involve checking technical eligibility, financial criteria, and compliance by a multi-departmental committee. This evaluation process alone is expected to take at least 5–6 months, after which DPR work can commence.

Bengaluru Business Corridor to Reduce 40% Congestion

Deputy CM DK Shivakumar has also promised to complete the 117-km Bengaluru Business Corridor (BBC) — formerly the Peripheral Ring Road — within two years. The corridor will link Tumakuru Road with Mysuru Road via Yelahanka and Electronics City and is expected to lower city congestion by nearly 40%.

Land Compensation Model With Five Options for Farmers

To fast-track land acquisition for the BBC and future Metro alignments, the state is offering farmers five compensation options, ensuring fair payouts. The government plans to borrow ₹27,000 crore through HUDCO for the project, while reducing the road width from 100m to 65m and reserving 5 metres for a future Metro line. (All Representative image)
