Bengaluru’s Next Big Bypass: Twin Tunnel–Flyover Plan Set To Reshape Ballari Road

1/9

Two-pronged traffic fix

Ballari Road is set for a major upgrade with two parallel projects — a short tunnel and an elevated corridor — aimed at easing congestion between Hebbal and Mehkri Circle, one of north Bengaluru’s most traffic-heavy stretches. (AI image)

2/9

Short tunnel plan

A 2.2-km short tunnel is planned between Hebbal and the veterinary college. The tunnel will have three lanes on each side and is intended to carry through-traffic away from crowded junctions above. (AI image)

3/9

Elevated corridor alignment

The proposed elevated corridor will stretch 1.2 km from UAS staff quarters to Mehkri Circle. Designed as a two-lane, bi-directional structure, it will allow vehicles to bypass surface-level congestion. (AI image)

4/9

Integrated movement design

Both projects are planned as a single traffic system. Vehicles exiting the tunnel will directly access the elevated corridor, ensuring smooth, uninterrupted movement towards Mehkri Circle without rejoining surface roads. (AI image)

5/9

Airport-bound traffic relief

The combined tunnel and elevated corridor are designed primarily for motorists travelling from the airport side toward central Bengaluru, offering a faster and less congested alternative to existing routes. (AI image)

6/9

Mehkri Circle connectivity

The elevated corridor will include rotary up and down ramps at Mehkri Circle, improving access to Jayamahal Road and CV Raman Road and helping distribute traffic more evenly across key city arteries. (AI image)

7/9

Future network expansion

There is scope to extend connectivity by linking the elevated corridor to a proposed east-west elevated road connecting KR Pura and Yeshwanthpur, strengthening the city’s long-term road network. (AI image)

8/9

Existing routes retained

Motorists heading towards the Cauvery Theatre side will continue to use the existing underpass, ensuring that present traffic patterns are maintained alongside the new infrastructure additions. (AI image)

9/9

Wider tunnel push

Alongside this project, tenders have also been floated for a separate 17-km tunnel road from Hebbal to Central Silk Board, indicating a broader push toward underground and elevated traffic solutions. (AI image)
