Bengaluru:
Biocon Biologics
and
Viatris
(formerly Mylan) have launched cancer drug
bevacizumab
under the brand name
Abevmy
in Canada. Abevmy was co-developed by the two companies. It is a biosimilar to Roche’s Avastin and has been approved by Health
Canada
across four oncology indications.
The companies previously launched bevacizumab as Abevmy in the European Union, and as Krabeva in India and Malaysia. Bevacizumab is used in certain types of colorectal cancer, lung cancer, and ovarian, fallopian tube and peritoneal cancer, and in glioblastoma.
Matthew Erick, chief commercial officer for advanced markets at Biocon Biologics, said Abevmy is the third cancer biosimilar they have introduced in Canada. The others are trastuzumab, under the brand name Ogivri, and pegfilgrastim, under Fulphila. Biosimilars or biologics are biological drugs that are developed to be highly similar and clinically equivalent to an existing biological drug, and they can be developed once the original drug’s patent expires. They are normally priced much lower than the original drug.
