Curbs on vehicle stickers at Tirupati trigger sanctity vs identity debate
Bengaluru: What was meant to be a devotional trip to Tirupati turned into an emotional flashpoint for a Bengaluru motorist and a full-blown social media debate over what type of stickers and symbols on vehicles should be allowed inside the temple town.An Instagram reel posted Friday showed a visibly distressed man peeling off a small Karnataka state flag sticker from his car's rear windshield at a Tirupati checkpoint. The reason, he said, was a Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) rule barring flags and symbols on vehicles entering the hill shrine.
The incident took place Thursday, when a two-wheeler garage owner from central Bengaluru travelled to Tirupati with his wife and two children. Trouble began at the vehicle checkpoint near Tirupati, where officials objected to the sticker on his car.He recounted the 45-minute exchange with security staff and his unsuccessful attempt to explain that the sticker was neither political nor religious. He started back to Bengaluru the same night. Later, he put out an appeal to Andhra CM Chandrababu Naidu and DyCM Pawan Kalyan to address the issue. He stated: "I travelled all the way from Bengaluru to Tirupati by car with a Karnataka state flag sticker on the vehicle, but was stopped and told to pull it down. When I questioned, security personnel said TTD rules do not allow political flags. I tried to explain that it was not a political flag, but a Karnataka state map — an emotion and a feeling for us. I had no motive behind it; I pasted it purely out of love for my state. It was heartbreaking to remove the sticker with my own hands. We come only for 1 or 2 days for darshan. I request the authorities to allow such state symbols for visitors like me."The reel quickly went viral, drawing hundreds of comments and sharply polarising social media users. Some expressed anger, viewing the incident as an affront to Kannada identity. Others pushed back, saying the restrictions were uniform, not targeted at any state or language. A netizen, identified as Vikram, reacted: "Tirumala is governed by TTD rules that treat the temple hill as a strictly apolitical and non-commercial spiritual zone. The idea is to keep the focus entirely on worship and maintain the sanctity of the place. Allowing party flags, state symbols, or promotional stickers could lead to political signalling, competition, or even law-and-order issues among devotees. To avoid that, TTD enforces a blanket ban. No parties, no states, no promotions. Everyone is equal once you're on the hill. It is about preserving neutrality and peace at a major pilgrimage site."
