Diversion road in front of Cantt railway station may open to public by Jan-end

Bengaluru: As part of the Cantonment railway station’s redevelopment project, the South Western Railway has developed a 24-metre diversion in front of the station. The road will be opened to the public by this month-end. The diversion will help the free flow of vehicles coming from Jayamahal Road and Millers Road to move towards Shivajinagar, Pulikeshinagar, Nagawara, Banasawadi, Kammanahalli and other areas.Anticipating traffic jams once the redevelopment work starts, the SWR built the 80-ft-wide three-lane road for a length of 24 metres with the help of BBMP. According to SWR, the diversion road will create more space in front of the station building and enable expansion of circulating area in front of the station.“The present road in front of the railway station will be excavated to carry out other works as part of the redevelopment project. Meetings are being held between the officials from SWR and BBMP and also from the contract agency. The excavation work may start within two weeks. The diversion road will be open to the public before the excavation work begins,” said an SWR official.Prime Minister Narendra Modi had laid the foundation stone for the redevelopment work on June 20, 2022.The South Western Railway has established an office where engineers are working day and night to complete the project by October 2025 as targeted. The SWR is planning to conserve the heritage structure of the present station building.
