BENGALURU: Over 1 lakh people of the Sikh community will visit seven gurdwaras across the city to celebrate

Guru Nanak

Jayanti on Friday, the 549th birth anniversary of their founder Guru Nanak.

The largest of the gurdwaras,

Sri Guru Singh Sabha

in Ulsoor, is expecting over 25,000 people for the celebrations, which will start at 3.30am and go on till midnight, and will include langars.

“Starting with Naam Simran at 3.30am, many ragis will recite the kirtans, including one from Amritsar’s Golden Temple,” said Kuldeep Singh, general secretary of Sri Guru Singh Sabha committee.

On November 18, as a precursor to the celebrations, a procession carrying the holy book, the

Guru Granth Sahib

, was taken out from the

gurdwara

through Ulsoor, MG Road, BRV Circle, Gangadhar Chetty Road and Infantry Road.

Host of events lined up

“Since next year marks Guru Nanak’s 550th birth anniversary, we will hold many events in the run-up to the celebrations; they’ll be spiritual, physical and educational in nature. Apart from having ragis recite kirtans in the gurdwara on a bi-monthly basis, we will hold camps for the youth, organise Sikh martial art classes for women and spread the teachings of Guru Nanak,” said Singh.

Harjinder Singh, president of the committee, said they are looking at the possibility of setting up a dialysis centre in the gurdwara complex, where the poor can avail treatment for a few hundred rupees.

“We would like to spread the Guru Nanak’s simple message — work for humanity, help others, live a honest life and share it with others,” said Harjinder.
