HAVERI: The Haveri district health officer (DHO) ordered the suspension of a nursing officer at Aduru Primary Health Centre in Hangal taluk on Wednesday for using Fevikwik adhesive instead of proper sutures on a child's wound, sparking outrage among parents.

Initially, the DHO issued a show-cause notice to Nurse Jyothi and transferred her to another PHC.

Following significant criticism on social media regarding the health staff and DHO's lenient approach, DHO Rajesh Suragihalli ultimately suspended her, pending a departmental inquiry.

Sources indicate that 7-year-old Gurukrishna Annappa Hosamani suffered a deep leg and chin injury while playing on January 14. Upon being taken to Aduru Primary Health Centre, Nurse Jyothi applied Fevikwik and dressed the wound rather than providing appropriate medical treatment. The injury required three stitches, but the nurse used adhesive instead.

When confronted, Nurse Jyothi justified her actions by claiming that stitches would leave a scar and that Fevikwik was a safer option. She added that she would have referred them to another facility if the parents requested it.

The parents lodged a formal complaint with the Health Protection Committee of Aduru Health Centre but received an inadequate response. The initial decision to transfer rather than suspend the nurse further upset the family. Although the DHO acknowledged the complaint and ordered an investigation, the immediate suspension was not implemented.

"But after the public expressed their ire against the authority, the incident raised serious concerns regarding the quality of healthcare and the accountability of medical staff in the region. Finally, she lost her job," informed Annappa Hosamani, father of victim Gurukrishna.

"I suspended the nurse; the inquiry is still pending. Any health staff should not violate protocol while they are on duty," warned Rajesh Suragihalli, DHO.Check out the Valentine Day 2025 , along with the Valentine’s Day Wishes and Messages.
