BENGALURU: Heavy rain in southern parts of the city on Thursday night inundated shops on the ground floor in Arya Plaza opposite Uma Talkies on Bull Temple Road, Chamarajpet. There was two feet of water in some shops till Sunday.

N Krishnappa, who runs a photocopy shop in Arya Plaza for nearly 20 years, said, "It rained very heavily from 7pm to 9pm on Thursday. My photocopy machine is ruined. I called the serviceman, who said the motherboard is completely dysfunctional as water has entered it."

A

multistorey

complex is coming up three plots away from Arya Plaza.

Shopowners

alleged water is being released into

BWSSB sewage chambers

at night, which caused the waterlogging.

"When we asked those in charge at the site, they agreed they have been letting water into the sewage chambers with BWSSB permission," Krishnappa said.

There are roughly 18 shops in Arya Plaza; water entered seven on the ground floor and damaged goods.

K Bharathi, another affected shopowner, said, "Since last Thursday, we have been continuously cleaning our shops. I run a beauty parlour and

many

of the products have been damaged. Since the outbreak of Covid-19, business has been dull as we are not getting many customers. If the area stinks, no one would want to come inside." M Anil Kumar, a locksmith, said, "My machine is completely damaged. I have to spend a lot on getting it fixed."
