Bengaluru: Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) chief commissioner Tushar Giri Nath was the latest target of cybercriminals. A fraudster sent several WhatsApp messages in his name to senior urban local body officials seeking gifts.
An FIR has been registered in this regard at Central CEN crime police station.
The fraudster, using a photograph of 54-year-old Giri Nath as WhatsApp display picture bearing contact number 7076522681, initially entered into casual conversation with officials, including special commissioners, on Thursday.
According to an official, the accused sent a message saying, “As I am preoccupied with the work, I will not be accessing the phone. Can you send me gifts through Amazon?” However, this official did not receive any website link.
The fraudster also sent a website link to several other officials asking for gifts. BBMP sources said the miscreants might have plotted to use the link to siphon off money. However, no one fell prey to the trap as everyone got suspicious. A couple of officials brought it to Giri Nath’s notice. Giri Nath immediately took to Twitter to alert the public about the matter. “The the number used for sending messages is not mine. Some fraudster has been misusing this as the number of the BBMP chief commissioner and misleading the public and officials. A complaint has been registered against this person,” he stated.
