Sports, edu programmes soon at parade ground, says Lt Gen

Bengaluru: In the days to come, Field Marshal Manekshaw Parade Ground will witness defence programmes, sports competitions and educational programmes. Lieutenant General KS Brar, General Officer Commanding (GOC) of Dakshin Bharat Area, announced this Monday during the unveiling of a 7-ft-tall iron frame statue of Field Marshal Manekshaw and the grand entrance gate at the parade ground. Lt Gen Brar recalled that the parade ground extended from Cubbon Park to its present location during the British period, and was called Sports Ground and Garrison Parade Ground. Later, owing to the needs of urbanization, the range shrank. He said the ground was venue to the Republic Day and Independence Day celebrations every year but wasn’t identified as a military establishment. “Major General Ravi Murugan, GOC of Karnataka and Kerala Sub Area, initiated the project of giving this ground an identity in October 2023. This is a historic moment,” he added.According to Lt Gen Brar, the grand gate boasts a meticulously planned layout, a harmonious blend of military precision and artistic finesse. “The 66-ft-wide, 20-ft-high gate embodies the discipline of effort that defines the Indian Army. It is also architecturally appealing, seamlessly blending tradition with modern design. Intricate detailing and symbolic elements adorn its structure, creating a visual spectacle, signifying the military ethos associated with the Indian Army,” he said. Field Marshal Manekshaw’s statue is flanked by the insignia of Southern Command and Karnataka and Kerala Sub Area. “The statue captures the essence of his resolute leadership, serving as a poignant reminder of his invaluable contributions to the nation,” Lt Gen Brar explained.
