DHAR: At least seven people died and three sustained injuries when a gas tanker travelling in the wrong direction collided with two four-wheelers on the Badnawar-Ujjain highway in Madhya Pradesh's Dhar district, police said on Thursday.
The catastrophic collision occurred around 11 pm on Wednesday near Bamansuta village when the gas tanker struck a car and a jeep approaching from the opposite direction, Dhar SP Manoj Kumar Singh said.
Four individuals perished instantly at the scene, whilst three others succumbed to their injuries subsequently in hospital, he said.
Senior officials promptly arrived at the location to coordinate rescue efforts.
Local residents assisted in the rescue operation, utilising a crane to extricate trapped individuals from the vehicles, the SP said.
The wounded were transported to a medical facility in neighbouring Ratlam district, he said.
The deceased hailed from Ratlam, Mandsaur (in MP) and Jodhpur (Rajasthan) districts, the SP said.
The lorry driver absconded from the scene following the incident.
