CM Yadav releases two more cheetahs in Kuno, total no. in India now at 57
Bhopal: Chief minister Mohan Yadav released two more female cheetahs into the wild at Kuno National Park in Sheopur district on Monday. Both cheetahs were brought from Botswana and had been kept in the quarantine enclosure before release. With the arrival of nine cheetahs from Botswana, two of which were released in the forests on Monday, the total number of cheetahs in India, including cubs born in the country, has risen to 57.
Yadav said that this initiative of the state govt has provided expansion and fresh momentum to the ongoing Project Cheetah in Madhya Pradesh. The effort reflects the spirit of coexistence with wildlife. He also expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union forest and environment minister Bhupender Yadav for their support in the rehabilitation of cheetahs brought from Botswana.
Yadav further said that Madhya Pradesh, which is at the forefront of wildlife conservation, now has cheetahs freely roaming across nearly 5,000 square kilometres and steadily expanding their population. The number of cheetahs in the state has now increased to 57, and the animals have adapted well and are living together like a family.
Cheetahs are now seen roaming in Sheopur, Kuno, Palpur, Rajgarh, as well as in the Malwa and Chambal regions. At times, they even sprint across from Madhya Pradesh into Rajasthan.
