Bhopal

: Minister for school education,

Kunwar Vijay Shah

, on Tuesday announced that "student

polls

" would begin at all 3,500 government-run higher secondary schools to "train students to participate in assembly and parliamentary elections".

Impressed by Government Model higher secondary school, which has been conducting student polls for eight years, Shah told TOI: "I will issue an order to government schools to conduct student polls mandatorily in order to build students' vision toward democracy and its functioning." "It's inspiring to see students getting trained at such a young age, preparing themselves to choose the right leader so that they can take the correct decision when they are eligible to vote. Most importantly, I am happy to see such a step taken by one of our government schools," Shah told

TOI

, adding that it will encourage more students to enrol in government schools.

Shah told TOI that his department will hold a crucial meeting on this on Wednesday.

The minister was guest of honour at the students' "oath taking ceremony".
