Goa, K’taka rumble echoes in MP assembly
Bhopal: The Goa and Karnataka crises echoed in Madhya Pradesh assembly on Thursday when former Speaker Sitasharan Sharma remarked during a Budget discussion that the Kamal Nath government “doesn’t have much time left”. It sparked a heated exchange in the House.
Sharma was obliquely referring to an oft-repeated remark of BJP leaders that the Congress government’s days in MP are numbered and it may fall any time. Speaker for two terms, Sharma made the remark while participating in the debate on the budget presented on July 10. Questioning the availability of funds for Congress government’s ambitious agri loan waiver scheme, he said, “Please tell the House about the number of farmers whose loans are to be waived, and the amount needed for this. Whatever you want to do, do it fast as you don’t have much time left.”
Finance minister Tarun Bhanot objected, saying: “These remarks do not suit a politician like you who has been on the (Speaker’s) chair.” Even as Sitasharan Sharma gestured namaste with folded hands, Bhanot said: “If you want to tell us that what is happening in Goa or Karnataka may happen here, too, then this is not decent on your part.” BJP MLA Vishwas Sarang commented, “Tension ho gaya kya (Are you tense )?”
Continuing the debate, Sharma wondered why the Congress was bringing a ‘Right to Water’ law. “Do you think people do not offer water in this country? Will people move court if they are not offered water?” He questioned the government’s proposed new law for Right to Health and accused Congress of “misleading people” with such steps.
Many other MLAs, including Sanjeev Singh Sanju of BSP from Bhind, Dinesh Rai Munmun Rai, BJP from Seoni and Yashpal Singh Sisodia BJP MLA from Mandsaur among others also spoke. The debate will continue on Friday also.
