JABALPUR: A 5.2 kg baby was born via cesarean section at Government Elgin Hospital in Jabalpur on Tuesday, an unusually high birth weight compared to the average of 2.5 to 3.5 kg for newborns.
The mother, Shubhangi, wife of Anand Chaubey from Ranji, was admitted to the hospital on Aug 9 and delivered the baby on Sept 3 due to the baby's size. Both mother and child are healthy and under close observation in Ward No 9, with a medical team monitoring them around the clock, said ward in-charge Anita Chaudhary.
Chief medical and health officer Sanjay Mishra explained that babies weighing over 5 kg are rare, often linked to maternal diabetes. "It can also result from a very rich diet during pregnancy," he said.
He noted that cesarean delivery is usually necessary in such cases for the safety of mother and child.
Doctors advised that antenatal monitoring is crucial for expectant mothers, especially those with high blood sugar or nutritional imbalances. Shubhangi and her baby are stable and will remain under observation for a few more days before discharge.
