: The much-awaited

Tansen Festival

began in

Gwalior

on Saturday, amid the shadow of the Covid-19 pandemic. The inaugural day events started with cross-cultural offerings of Harikatha, Milad and shehnai vadan at Tansen’s samadhi in Hazira, with strict corona guidelines in place.


In the evening, the classical event started with the grandeur befitting the cult status of the 95-year-old festival, in the presence of MP culture minister

and energy minister Pradhuman Singh Tomar. On day one, celebrated santoor player Pt Satish Vyas was conferred with the prestigious Tansen Samman. Bhopal-based institution Abhinav Kala Parishad was honoured with Raja Mansingh Tomar award.

Thakur said, “Despite Covid, the MP government allowed to host Tansen festival so that the legacy continues. We assure you that next year, this event will be celebrated on a much bigger scale. On music lovers’ demand, we are also giving serious consideration to start a

Award for music. The state government is committed to promote all kinds of arts and artistes.”

Tomar said, “Killa Gate Chauraha area in Gwalior should be promoted in every possible manner, which will not only give a fillip to tourism but also create plenty of employment opportunities for the youth.”

Speaking to TOI, musician Satish Vyas said, “I’m really overwhelmed at this moment; it is the top-of-the-line award for any musician and singer in India. I have no words to express my thoughts; I dedicate this award to my parents and also to my guru Pt Shivkumar Sharma, who have blessed me, always.”

Many VIPs, including Ashish Saxena, Suresh Raje, Sahitya Kumar, Kaushlendra Vikram Singh, Amit Sanghi and Rahul Rastogi were present, among others.
