have launched a campaign to protect the elderly, especially those living alone, from

Covid-19 exposure

. The cops are helping them in their daily lives by purchasing ration, fetching milk from the market. They also bring medicines for them.

Elderly people are considered more vulnerable to Covid-19.

Simrahi village

were happy when cops reached their home and asked about their well-being. “They also asked us whether we need anything”, they said.

As their son works in Delhi as labourer, they would seek help from villagers for their needs. “Some would oblige , others would say no”, Kumhar said.

Soojan Singh

, 90, of the same village in Chandla tehesil said his son had returned home after the outbreak of pandemic but returned as there was no work . “Now police are looking after us”, he said.

Superintendent of police

Chattarpur Sachin Sharma

said, “In my previous assignments I had observed the plight of the aged people. When curfew was imposed in Chattarpur after coronavirus spread, I decided to help them.”

He said that about 100 elderly have been identified. “One police man will look after three elderly who live in his police station area and police beat”.

He plans to identify 3,000 elderly according to the availability of the police force.

The SP said, “This is not impacting other duties of the cops.”

Initially there were hardly any Covid-19 patients in Chattarpur district but gradually the numbers increased like other places.
