Malnourished 4-month-old girl dies in Madhya Pradesh, twin brother critical

BHOPAL: A four-month-old girl allegedly suffering from malnutrition died in Satna while her twin brother remains in intensive care, exposing lapses in rural health monitoring after the siblings were treated by a quack for 15 days.

Supriya alias Priyanshi and Naitik of Pathra village, Majhgawan, were born underweight at 2 kg and below on December 21, 2025.

Despite being high-risk, they were never enrolled in a Nutrition Rehabilitation Centre.

Unwell for two weeks with vomiting, fever and diarrhoea, they were taken to a quack in Jugulpur instead of a hospital.

The quack treated them for nearly 15 days.

They were both brought to Majhgawan health centre on April 21 severely malnourished - Naitik 2.93 kg and dehydrated while Supriya weighed 2.86 kg.

The duo was referred to Satna district hospital where they were put in pediatric ICU.

As the girl's condition worsened the next day, both were referred to medical college in Rewa. The girl died soon after referral, while the boy continues to be under treatment.

Officials said the infants were fed cow and goat milk as their mother was too weak to breastfeed. The family lacked guidance on infant nutrition. This was her fourth delivery; one child had died earlier.

A joint health and WCD report flagged multiple failures in the case.

Though registered on the nutrition tracker and given birth vaccinations, the twins missed follow-ups. Regular home visits were not done.

Field staff failed to ensure timely referrals as the children stayed ill for 15 days with the quack. Mandatory NRC admission for low birth weight was skipped.

The report holds the supervisor and ANM accountable for poor monitoring and confirms action against the anganwadi worker.

Block Medical Officer Dr Rupesh Soni filed an FIR on April 22 against quack Premlal Anuragi of Jugulpur. A raid at his clinic found he ran the clinic without licence, used restricted medicines, and disposed medical waste improperly. Medicines were seized and the clinic sealed. Majhgawan has seen repeated malnutrition cases, raising concerns over grassroots healthcare and nutrition awareness.
