MP boat tragedy: Mother, 3-year-old son found holding each other in death; haunting image surfaces
BHOPAL/JABALPUR: Even as search teams, including the army, continued combing the waters of Bargi Dam, located about 40km from Jabalpur on the Narmada River, a moment of grief brought operations to a standstill when the ninth body was recovered, that of a woman found with her three-year-old child still in her arms.
Rescuers said both were wearing life jackets but the child remained tightly held against the mother.
Even rescue personnel were visibly shaken while bodies of the mother and child were brought to shore.
The recovery comes amid an intensified, round-the-clock operation. The capsized cruise remains lodged nearly 20 feet deep in the reservoir, with divers, boats and heavy machinery deployed to reach it.
Efforts are underway to drag the vessel closer to shore and access its submerged compartments.
The incident took place on Thursday evening when an MP Tourism cruise boat carrying around 40 to 45 passengers capsized nearly 300 metres from the embankment after being hit by a sudden storm. Strong winds estimated at around 40 kmph and heavy rain caused the vessel to lose control and sink rapidly.
By Friday, nine bodies had been recovered. While 16 people were rescued on Thursday, there is still no clarity on the exact number of missing persons. Officials fear several may still be trapped inside the sunken vessel.
Survivor accounts paint a grim picture of chaos and unpreparedness. Many alleged that there were no proper safety checks before departure and that life jackets were either unavailable or distributed only after the boat began sinking. In the critical first moments, it was local villagers who rushed in, throwing ropes into the water and helping pull out those struggling to stay afloat.
Rescue operations, initially slowed by darkness and rough weather, have now been scaled up. Teams from the SDRF are being assisted by the Indian Army, with ground units deployed at the site. A special helicopter has also been pressed into service to aid aerial surveillance and coordinate rescue efforts, while paramilitary teams continue to assist on the ground.
Amid the tragedy, stories of survival are emerging. One such case involves a family from the Ordnance Factory in Khamaria. Around 15 members of the family had gone for an outing, but only one young boy has been rescued so far. His father, Kamraj Arya, along with his wife and another son, remains missing, underscoring the devastating impact on entire families.
As authorities race against time, hydraulic machinery is being used to create access routes in the water and attempts are ongoing to reach those feared trapped inside the wreckage.
Officials say the image of the mother and her child, held together even in death, continues to haunt the rescue site. Along the banks of the Narmada, anxious families wait in silence, clinging to hope as the search continues.
