3 more die in Ganjam in rain-related incidents

BERHAMPUR/BHUBANESWAR: Three persons, including a two year-old girl, died in rain-related incidents in the last 24 hours in Ganjam district, taking the death toll in the past two days to five as showers continued to batter interior Odisha.

Kanak Nayak, a 55-year-old woman farmer from Digambarapalli died in lightning strike when she was working in her paddy field on Wednesday. She was taken to the sub-divisional hospital, Bhanjanagar, where the doctors declared her dead. Tiki, the two-year-old daughter of Bishnu Nayak, drowned in a canal at Rambhapalli, after she slipped and fell while she and her mother were returning from her grandparents’ house.

Villagers rescued her from the overflowing canal and took her to the hospital, where doctors declared her dead.

14-year-old girl dies by suicide

A 14-year-old girl in Bhopal died by suicide by hanging herself. No suicide note was found, leaving the reason behind her extreme step unknown. The girl's mother found her hanging in their home after returning from a temple. She was rushed to the hospital, but doctors were unable to save her. In another incident, a 55-year-old farmer died by suicide in Bhopal after his wife left him without informing anyone. Investigations are ongoing in both cases. A 12-year-old boy from Uttar Pradesh also committed suicide in Ludhiana.

35-year-old woman and her sister threatened over phone

A woman from Bairagarh and her sister have allegedly been harassed and threatened by a man from Gwalior for over two and a half years. The woman, a schoolteacher, lodged a complaint with the Bairagarh police, who have registered a case and initiated investigations. The accused had approached their family with a marriage proposal for the younger sister, which they rejected. Since then, he has been harassing and threatening them through phone calls. The police are currently looking into the matter.
