BHUBANESWAR: The crime branch, which has been groping in dark to unravel the motive behind Odisha health minister Naba Kishore Das’s killing by ASI Gopal Das, is seemed to have made a significant headway in the investigation with the sleuths coming to know that the accused had reportedly written his motive on a piece of paper.

ASI Das had flushed the paper in the toilet of the Airport police station at Jharsuguda where he was detained on January 29, the day he gunned down Naba from his service pistol.

The crime branch sleuths dug the police station’s toilet tank late on Wednesday night and scavenged the key clue and recovered a drenched piece of handwritten paper. “During interrogation, the ASI told us that he had written the motive of killing the minister on the paper. But he flushed it in the police station’s toilet. We will examine the piece of paper that we recovered from the toilet tank,” a crime branch official said on Thursday.

The official, however, avoided a question whether the ASI told the investigators about his motive. The cops also parried as to why the ASI did not hand over the letter to them and what prompted him to destroy the evidence. The reason as to why the ASI did not communicate his motive via text message or WhatsApp to his family members before committing the crime also went unanswered by the crime branch.

“We are investigating from all angles to ascertain the exact motive of the crime,” the crime branch official said.
