Berhampur: Several social activists and students from different pharmaceutical institutes on Tuesday urged the state govt for establishment of National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER) in Berhampur.
Under the banner of the Milita Kriyanustan Committee, they went in a rally to the office of revenue divisional commissioner (southern division). An MoU supporting their demand was submitted to chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi through the revenue divisional commissioner (RDC) here.
Earlier, several MLAs of Ganjam district submitted a memorandum to the chief minister in support of establishing NIPER. The first pharmaceutical college of the state was established in Mohada near Berhampur in the 1970s to impart pharmaceutical education to students. At least four other such colleges have been established in the city in the private sector. Now, Berhampur is the hub of pharmaceutical education in the state, said Saroj Ranjan Pattnaik, convener of the committee.
Stating that the establishment of NIPER is a long-standing demand of the people of Ganjam, Pattnaik said the institute would further strengthen the research ecosystem in the upcoming pharmaceutical industries in Gopalpur.
He said Berhampur is well connected by railway and roads. It has educational institutes like the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Berhampur University, Khallikote Unitary University (KUU), MKCG Medical College and Hospital, Ayurvedic and Homeopathic Colleges, and pharmaceutical colleges. The pharmaceutical students of Berhampur are working in different towns across the country and abroad, he said.
Not only the students in pharmaceutical science will benefit, but the pharmaceutical industries will also benefit if NIPER is established in Berhampur, said Pattnaik. He said several pharmaceutical industries would also be interested to set up their units in the state if the institute is established in Berhampur, he added and appealed to consider its establishment here.
