BHUBANESWAR: Having cleared the Class X board exam together, a 38-year-old woman and her 15-year-old son are now planning to go to junior college.

Jyosna Padhi and her son, Aloknath Patra, of Pujariput in Koraput district secured E grade and B1 grade with 76% marks, respectively, in the state Class X boards, the results of which were out on Wednesday.

The boy plans to take up science in Plus II, while the mother will opt for arts.

Jyosna said she dropped out of school in 2000 and got married six years later, so she did not get an opportunity to continue her studies then. “Last year, I took admission in the Government Boys’ High School, Jeypore, through correspondence mode. I used to study at night after doing the household chores and after helping my husband at the temple,” she added. She said her son used to help clear her doubts.

“I am happy that we both passed the examination, but I am proud of my son for securing 76% without any tuition,” she beamed.

Her son, Aloknath, too feels proud of his mother’s achievement. “I am lucky to have my mother as my classmate. Apart from discussing different topics, we used to prepare notes while reading textbooks. We did not take any tuition. Now my mother will also go to college with me,” he said. A student of Pujariput High School, Aloknath secured 456 out of 600 marks.

His father, Trinath, said the school used to send all the study material online on his wife’s WhatsApp number during the Covid-19 pandemic. “While my son would attend the online classes during the initial days of the pandemic, my wife would observe him and even read some of his study material. On seeing this, I persuaded her to take admission in Class X and appear for the exam with our son,” he added.

Trinath works for a bank in Pujariput. When he is free from work, he devotes time to the Jagannath Temple in his village as a priest. “I am planning to send my son and my wife to junior college (higher secondary schools),” he said.
