NEW DELHI: A woman allegedly attempted self-immolation on the premises of Dhenkanal superintendent of police’s office on Saturday, accusing police of ignoring her complaint of harassment.
According to officials, she had first approached the Town police station alleging mental harassment by her husband’s cousin, but was told to go to the Sadar police station. When she went there, officers reportedly sent her back to the Town station, citing jurisdiction.
Frustrated, she poured petrol on herself at the SP office, but was immediately restrained and rescued by personnel present. Police also seized a bottle of petrol and a matchbox from her possession.
Superintendent of Police Abhinav Sonkar later spoke to the woman and assured her of legal action. “I have discussed the matter with the woman and assured her of taking appropriate legal action regarding her complaint,” Sonkar told reporters.
Meanwhile, two sub-inspectors — Utkal Bijay Mohanty of Town police station and Rosalin Minz of Sadar police station — were suspended for “negligence” in duty, police said.
