'He was a drug trafficker': FB post links AAP leader Lucky Oberoi murder to student ‘poll’
JALANDHAR: A local Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) functionary, Satwinderpal Singh aka Lucky Oberoi, was gunned down in a brazen daylight hit outside a gurdwara in Jalandhar on Friday.
The murder was captured on CCTV. At 7.35am, Lucky was in his Thar, settling into the front seat after paying obeisance at Gurdwara Singh Sabha in Model Town, when a man in a hoodie emerged from behind a car, walked casually towards him and began shooting at point-blank range. Another youth in a hoodie drove up on a scooter from a nearby lane and the two sped back the same way.
Lucky was hit by five bullets in the face and chest. Other devotees and passersby took him to hospital but he couldn't be saved. The gunmen are yet unidentified and the motive unclear. A Facebook post, in which a rival group claimed responsibility for the murder, indicates a personal feud.
Lucky's murder sent shockwaves through the state. Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav rushed to Jalandhar, inspected the crime scene and held a high-level meeting with senior police officers to review the investigation. CM Bhagwant Mann is personally monitoring the case and was being updated regularly on the developments, the DGP said.
The killers would be nabbed soon and police would ensure exemplary punishment as per the law, said the DGP.
A financier who also dealt in property, Lucky was close to AAP's Jalandhar Cantt constituency in-charge Rajwinder Thiara. Lucky's wife, Simarjot Kaur, had unsuccessfully contested the local municipal corporation election last year on an AAP ticket.
The FB post that claimed responsibility for the murder linked it to the ‘election' of the students' union president of Khalsa College. Almost immediately, an old video, said to be from Dec 2025, emerged on social media in which Lucky is seen announcing the ‘appointment' of the union president and vice-president.
The FB account, which is named ‘Joga Folriwal' and has 6,500 followers, said: "This act (murder) was carried out due to personal enmity. His portrayal as a leader on social media is false. He was a drug trafficker and a user, and we have evidence of his illegal activities. The murder is linked to the presidency of Khalsa College. He aligned himself with AAP to cover his wrongdoings, but he was not a leader; rather, he was a police informer. He maintained connections with police due to his illegal activities, causing harm to our brothers. Today, we responded to the nonsense he spread about us... If anyone believes this murder was unjust, they can contact us." The post mentions Surjeet Kooner, Sonu Khatri, Joga Folriwal, Sahgal Jalandhar, Shivi, Vinay Tiwari, and ‘Khatri Group Nawanshahr'.
Police registered an FIR against Jograj Singh alias Joga Folriwal and Dalbira, on the basis of a statement given by Lucky's brother, Damandeep Singh, who claimed the duo had an enmity with Lucky and had threatened him earlier. He said one of their friends, who had gone to the gurdwara with Lucky, saw two vehicles "hurriedly following the scooter-borne assailants".
DGP Yadav said: "We reviewed the investigations and are tracking all movements of the suspects. Police teams have collected mobile tower dumps to advance the investigation through technical analysis. All theories are being thoroughly investigated."

When he knows he has enemies thanks to his nefarious activities, why announce his name on the car in bold. Vanity. His career in crime put to an end. AAP must be feeling sad for the loss.Read allPost comment
