MOHALI: The National Public Amenities Committee (PAC), Railway Board, Union Ministry of Railways observed the absence of a public transport system at Mohali railway station. PAC chairman P K Krishnadas learned about this while interacting with passengers waiting from trains at the station.
Passengers waiting for the trains alleged that they had to pay hefty charges demanded by auto rickshaw drivers in the absence of pre-paid booths and public transport. Krishnadas directed team members to take note of the issue and said that directions would be issued to Chandigarh and Mohali administrations to make arrangements for public transport systems during arrival time of trains. He also said that the GRP would be directed to establish a pre paid booth at the station. PAC north zone coordinator Tajinder Singh Sram said that the Mohali Railway Station now saw increased footfall and number of trains.
The railway station now has a proper drinking water facility, public toilets and operational waiting rooms, said station superintendent Parveen Kumar Saini. He added that the station had daily footfall of 1,500 and was generating revenue of Rs 1.5 lakh daily. Earlier, only two trains halted at Mohali, Ambala-Morinda passenger and New Delhi-Chandigarh Jan Shatabdi express was extended to Una via Mohali in 2008.
In 2014, Mohali railway station figured on the global rail link map after inauguration of Chandigarh-Ludhiana electrified rail link.
