Daily-wage Punjab couple sold baby for over Rs 2L; 4 more held in trafficking racket

BAHADURGARH: A daily-wage couple from Punjab's Faridkot had sold their three-day old baby boy for Rs 2.25 lakh to members of an inter-state newborn trafficking racket busted by the Haryana Police in Bahadurgarh on April 1, police said on Tuesday after nabbing four more people, taking the total arrests in the case to seven.

Investigations said the couple believed their son would receive a better upbringing, whom the accused were planning to sell to a childless couple in Delhi for Rs 9.25 lakh. The child was rescued on April 1 when police intercepted suspicious vehicles and apprehended the three accused in Bahadurgarh.

Station house officer (SHO) Jameel Ahmed said the baby was initially shifted to a community health centre in Jhajjar. Following a preliminary assessment, doctors referred him to a central care facility in Rewari. "The baby is healthy. A team of doctors is closely monitoring his condition," the SHO said.

The arrested four accused have been identified as Sandeep Pawar (Ballabhgarh), Rudra Pratap Singh (Raipur), Vijay (Greater Noida West), and Mohan Panchal (Delhi/Ghaziabad). All of them were caught in Bahadurgarh. They were produced before a court on Tuesday and remanded in five days of police custody. Officials said raids are on to catch other members of the racket, including the absconding kingpin and potential buyers.

Police said the accused targeted vulnerable childless couples through social media platforms, luring them with promises of illegal adoption in exchange for large sums of money.
