BATHINDA: Cold to severe cold conditions were observed in isolated pockets of Punjab and Haryana on Thursday.

Dense fog with visibility of less than 50 metres was reported in some parts of Punjab. In isolated pockets of Haryana and Himachal Pradesh, dense fog with visibility up to 200 metres was observed.

Zero visibility was reported in Amritsar and Pathankot, 10 metres in Patiala, 20 in Ludhiana, and 40 metres in Ambala and Karnal. Visibility was 50 metres in Bilaspur and 100 metres in Mandi in Himachal Pradesh.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a western disturbance as a cyclonic circulation lies over southwest Iran and its neighbourhood in the lower and middle tropospheric levels. Under its influence, light to moderate scattered rainfall is likely over the plains of northwest India from Jan 10-12. Thunderstorm conditions are expected at isolated places over Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh on Jan 11. An isolated hailstorm is also likely over south Haryana on Jan 11.

Minimum temperatures were reported at 1-4 degrees Celsius over isolated places in Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, and Haryana, and 5-10 degrees Celsius over many parts of the northwest. The lowest minimum temperature of 1.6 degrees Celsius was reported at Adampur in Punjab.

During the past 24 hours, there was a fall in minimum temperatures by 1-3 degrees Celsius over some parts of Himachal Pradesh. The minimum temperatures were reported below normal (-1 degrees to -3 degrees) at isolated places over Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, and Chandigarh. A rise in minimum temperatures by 2-4 degrees is likely over northwest India during the next four days, with a gradual fall by 2-3 degrees thereafter.
