Mohali: The Mohali police are probing a possible gangster angle in the firing incident targeting Advocate Gagandeep Jammu, former honorary secretary of the Punjab and Haryana high court bar association, who narrowly escaped an alleged assassination attempt near Kurali on May 19.
According to police sources, unidentified assailants had allegedly opened fire at Jammu’s vehicle while he was travelling. He escaped unhurt in the attack. Police teams are investigating the motive behind the incident, with focus on earlier extortion threats allegedly received by the advocate.
Advocate Gagandeep Jammu is the son of senior journalist and former Press Council of India member Balwinder Jammu. Speaking on the incident, Balwinder Jammu said his son had earlier received extortion threats from gangsters, following which the matter was reported to the police and security cover was provided to him. He added that the security cover was later withdrawn.
SP (investigation) Saurav Jindal said multiple police teams were working on the “gangster angle” and CCTV footage from Kurali, Kharar and Mullanpur areas had been collected and was being examined to identify the attackers.
“The victim informed us that he had earlier received extortion calls from some gangsters demanding ransom. All possible angles are being investigated,” said SP Jindal.
Three teams of the Mohali police, under the direct supervision of the SP (investigation), are conducting extensive investigations. The police are scrutinizing data and CCTV footage from toll plazas, roadside dhabas, restaurants and petrol pumps located along the Mohali-Kharar, Mohali-Kurali and Mohali-Mullanpur highways, extending towards Ropar, Morinda and Baddi .
