CHANDIGARH: Punjab received Best Tourism Village of India-2023 Award for village Nawan Pind Sardaran in Gurdaspur district at the launch of ‘Global Travel for Life’ on World Tourism Day organized by union ministry of tourism at Pragati Maidan in Delhi.
The village got the award for promoting and preserving Punjab's cultural heritage and sustainable development through tourism. A total 750 villages from 31 states and UTs had applied for the competition of Best Tourism Village Recognition 2023.
Principal Secretary, Tourism and Cultural Affairs Department, Rakhee Gupta Bhandari and deputy commissioner, Gurdaspur, Dr Himanshu Aggarwal and village representative Satwant Sangha, manager projects of department of tourism Sheetal Behl received the award from secretary, ministry of tourism V Vidyavathi.
Bhandari said locals in the village had worked in close coordination and guidance of Punjab tourism department to preserve their ancestral havelis and promote them as famous rural tourism spots which are now attracting tourists from different parts of the country as well as abroad. One of the popular havelis is known as 'The Kothi' while the other is 'Pipal Haveli'.
