caved in after a sewer broke, leaving residents on both sides disconnected, municipal corporation officials said on Sunday. .

According to the officials, the sewage water being discharged from Kharar had been affecting the nearby villages for the past few months, after which the authorities had decided to release it. On Saturday, when the officials came with their JCB machines to check the underground sewer and release its water, the flow became so much that the pipe could not bear the pressure and burst, after which the road caved in.

According to the officials, the villagers there had deliberately blocked the pipe, due to which water had reached the level of road. "To release the water on the other side and check its flow, we went there with a JCB machine, but the pressure was so much that the underneath part of the road couldn't bear it and the sewer burst," said one of the officials.

"Within no time, part of the road caved in. Many fish are believed to have died due to the contaminated water. The nearby villages are also facing a tough time due to foul odour," said

Narinder Singh

, a resident of Sotal village in Kharar.

Villagers said now they would have to travel 6km more to reach Kharar via the Randhawa road. This is the shortest available route now. Police officials also rushed to the spot and closed the road to prevent any mishap.
