CHANDIGARH: The World Peace Mission Trust (WPMT), a city-based organization, engaged in providing free education to the underprivileged children, on Sunday took out an 'Anti-smoking, anti-drug, anti-alcohol rally' in Jagatpura village. Lions Clubs active in Chandigarh and adjoining cities also participated in the rally. Lalit Behl, chairperson, WPMT flagged off the rally.

The rally was conducted and led by M N Shukla, secretary along with the members of World Peace Mission Trust and Lions Clubs.

The people of the village were apprised about the ill-effects of the intoxicants by giving them messages through placards and slogans carried and chanted by nearly 400 children getting free education under the

aegis

of World Peace Missing Trust, Chandigarh.

Carrying placards on anti-drugs themes, school children marched in the streets of Jagatpura shouting slogans and while telling residents to stay away from drugs and alcohol.

Shukla, who led the rally, later said that it was high time steps were taken to curb the growing use of drugs in the Tricity region. "Most people believe that drugs and alcohol consumption is not a big problem in cities like Chandigarh,

Mohali

or Panchkula unlike states like Punjab. We need to change this perception. Drugs are a big issue here too and authorities must initiate action now before the situation worsens," said Shukla.

Lalit Behl said that there was an urgent need for a better and improvised coordination among the Tricity police departments to stop the menace of drugs.

"If we have better coordination among the Tricity police departments, it would help in stopping the drugs smuggling. There is also a need to spread more awareness against drugs and alcohol," said Behl.
