1,200 stones removed from woman's gall bladder

CHENNAI: More than 1,200 stones were removed from the gall bladder of 55-year-old woman who complained of severe stomach pain, appetite loss, gastritis and bloating problems. Doctors discharged her two days after the surgery on Thursday from the Dr Mohan's Diabetes Specialties Centre.

The woman has been diabetic for more than a decade. She was admitted to the hospital a week ago with severe discomfort. After a series of tests, including an ultrasound, doctors said they were shocked to find 1,241 tiny stones in her gall bladder. Soon she was prepared for a laparoscopic cholecystectomy - the removal of gall bladder, said laparoscopic surgeon Dr R Balamurugan, also the medical Superintendent of SRM Medical College and Hospital.

"Diagnosis and intervention at the right time turned out to be a life-saver in the current circumstance of the patient," senior diabetologist Dr Brijendra Kumar said.
