Woman, 54, held for stealing gold chain

CHENNAI: A 54-year-old woman was arrested for stealing a gold chain from an elderly woman at a jewellery store in T Nagar on Saturday.

The accused was identified as P Ponarasi. Police said the victim, K Jayanthi, 62, had visited the jewellery store on Oct 13. She was carrying a gold chain weighing 5 sovereigns, intended for exchange.

After she left the shop, she discovered that her gold chain and 10,000 in cash were missing. Following Jayanthi's complaint, police traced Ponarasi to Puducherry, where she was arrested on Friday. She was brought to Chennai and remanded in judicial custody on Saturday.
