CHENNAI: Activist-filmmaker
Anurag Singh’s “Life and Freedom”, a documentary on how malnutrition affects primitive tribal groups, will be screened at the
Roja Muthiah Research Library
here at 5.30pm on Friday (October 25).
Organised by Ranga Mandira Academy of world dance and Ek Potlee Ret Ki, the 49-minute-long film documents the lives of two primitive tribal groups to study the nature of malnutrition.
It juxtaposes the life of the Sahariyas (a Munda-speaking tribe in
Madhya Pradesh
) who have lost their right of access to their forests to that of the Baigas (another tribe found in MP,
UP and Jharkhand) who, through mobilisation have retained their rights to their forest lands and its natural resources. The film goes beyond hunger to examine malnutrition as a crisis that arises from induced poverty.
Anurag Singh has worked with people’s movements, including the Narmada Bachao Andolan (
NBA
), National Campaign for People's Right to Information (NCPRI), Mazdoor Kisan Shakti Sangathan (MKSS),
Chhattisgarh
Mukthi Morcha (CMM) and several others.
He has spent his career documenting some of India’s most nuanced socio-political and human rights movements. His popular films include ‘Kaise Jeebo Re’ (Narmada Valley displacement), ‘Right to Information’ (People’s demand for RTI, the landmark transparency legislation), ‘Ordinary Heroes of Afghanistan’ (Solar electrification in remote areas of Afghanistan).
Screening will be followed by a discussion with Anurag Singh.
