CHENNAI: A CB-CID team probing kidnap and extortion by six Chennai police officers has rushed to Hyderabad to nab one of them — assistant commissioner A Sivakumar.
Probe into the extortion involving assets worth several crores and six police personnel gained momentum after a special team searched the residences of Sivakumar at Mugalivakkam in Chennai and at Usilampatti in Madurai district on Wednesday.
The CB-CID police said 31 documents were seized during a search of the house of Sivakumar.
The case relates to abduction of an entrepreneur named Rajesh, his family members, and his fiancée by the police team. They were kept in illegal confinement, threatened with bodily and sexual harassment unless they transferred ownership of properties in their names to a businessman named Srinivasa Rao.
It was on the complaint of Rao, who claimed that Rajesh owed him ₹5.5 crore that the police team comprising then Thirumangalam ACP Sivakumar, inspector Saravanan, sub-inspector Pandiarajan and policemen Giri, Bala, Shankar along with businessmen Venkatesh, Siva Srinivasa Rao, Tarun Krishna Prasad, and Kodambakkam Sree, abducted Rajesh and his family in 2019.
As the city police didn’t pursue his complaint, Rajesh approached the then DGP and filed a complaint. He reviewed the complaint and forwarded the petition to the CB-CID last year.
Police registered a case against 10 people including six policemen in May this year.
