Chennai hospital says early tracheostomy helps young Covid patients

CHENNAI: Doctors at the city-based

MIOT hospital

have said performing

early tracheostomy

for young Covid-19 patients improved treatment outcomes. The procedure creates an opening at the front of the neck so that a tube can be inserted into the windpipe (trachea) to help patients breathe.

The hospital said staying with non-invasive ventilation does not allow a lung with reduced elasticity to expel carbon-dioxide. "Once carbon-dioxide builds-up in the body, it can result in multiple organ failure and, eventually cause death," they said. The hospital offered tracheostomy to patients between 20-40 years of age. "By doing this, we allow the lung to rest, identify organisms that cause infection and restore the organ," a release noted. It reduced hospital stay to 21 days and increased success rate to 85%.
