CHENNAI: With just one more working week left for the incumbent DGP of Tamil Nadu TK Rajendran to retire, a Union public service commission (UPSC) committee in Delhi has started consultation to choose his successor.

Tamil Nadu chief secretary Girija Vaidyanathan and outgoing DGP Rajendran attended the meeting convened by the UPSC’s three-member committee on Thursday. The name is expected to be out in the couple of days.

Three UPSC board members — Rajni Kant Mishra, Braj Raj Sharma and Bharat Bhushan Vyas — apart from the Rajendran and Girija Vaidyanathan discussed the list of eligible IPS officers for the head of police force post. The meeting was held at the UPSC office in Delhi on Thursday. Both the two senior bureaucrats returned to the city by evening.

An official in the state home department said that the three shortlisted names for the post of DGPs would be communicated through a sealed cover to the state government by next week. The state government will then hold discusssions with senior bureaucrats ando pick one of them to occupy the head of police force seat.

The state government forwarded the names of all senior IPS officer, who fall in the zone of jurisdiction, to the UPSC in April this year. The list has K P Maghendran (since retired), S R Jangid, J K Tripathy, C K Gandhirajan, M S Jaffar Sait, Sri Lakshmi Prasad, Ashuthosh Shukla, N Tamil Selvan, Ashish Bhengra, C Sylendra Babu, Karan Singha, Prateep V Philip, R C Kudawla and Vijay Kumar.

As per the Supreme Court directions, officers who don’t have more than six months of service left would not be eligible to be considered for appointment as DGP. Hence, at least four IPS officers — Sangaram Jangid and Gandhirajan (both belonging to 1985 batch), Ashish Bhengra (1986) and RC Kudawla (1987) — are out of the list, as they have less than six months’ service left.
