CHENNAI: In less than a month since he took over as director general of police, Shankar Jiwal has completed reviewing about one-fourth of the special units in the state police.

“So far, I have conducted reviews with the CB-CID unit, Economic Offences Wing CID, police welfare unit, Technical Services, Armed Police and Commando Force,” Jiwal told TOI on Wednesday. Besides, addressing the grievances of police personnel and the common public on all working days has also been institutionalised, he said.

The 1990-batch IPS officer, belonging to Uttarakhand, took over as head of police force in Tamil Nadu on July 1. Since then, in response to chief minister M K Stalin’s instructions, the DGP has been meeting police and the public in the morning on all weekdays.

Also, in order to avoid long wait by complainants for a community service register (CSR) or first information report (FIR), Jiwal has introduced a receipt system. He has introduced reception officers, who are recruited on compassionate grounds, at all the 1,850 police stations including all-women police stations in the state. They will issue a receipt to all the complainants immediately. Later, the receipts could be altered into a CSR or a FIR, if need be.

“In Chennai city, we have introduced the ‘Manu Neethi’ mobile app and a web portal to feed in the details of the petitioners queuing up at the commissioner’s office. The programme will be extended to all commissioners, zonal heads and districts in the state.

Jiwal has also asked the unit heads to come up with a plan of action whenever they come to Chennai to meet him.

“It’s like a self-appraisal. The unit heads will bring a viable plan of action that would change the existing system I will scrutinise and approve their plan of action and will review the growth twice a month or once a month to achieve their goal,” Jiwal said.
