DMK functionary survives murder attempt, 8 held for opening fire at him

CUDDALORE: Police arrested eight people on Saturday on charges of attempting to murder a DMK functionary near Vridhachalam in Cuddalore district. Police seized two guns, a car and two mopeds from their possession. Police said enmity prevailed between T Ilaiyaraja, 48, a DMK functionary from Manavalanallur near Vridhachalam and R Adalarasu from AIADMK party from the same locality.

Ilaiyaraja left his farm on Friday and was about to board his car when a gang of more than eight people, two of them armed with guns, opened fire at him in an attempt to murder him. Ilaiyaraja sustained an injury in his hip and neck and chin when the pieces of windowpane hit his face. Ilaiyaraja managed to escape in his car. He was admitted to a private hospital in Puducherry.

Police registered a case after he lodged a complaint that Adalarasu and his elder brother Puzhagenthi, 27 and other unidentified people attempted to murder him. Police formed three special teams to nab the accused. A team while making a routine inspection spotted Adalarasu and Puzhagenthi attempting to flee in a cab. The team nabbed them and also six of their associates involved in the crime.
