CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Monday said efforts are on to set up Tamil chairs in several

universities

across the world.

Palaniswami was speaking at a Tiruvallur Day function organised by the state government.

“The state government extended a financial aid of Rs 10 crore to set up a

Tamil chair

in Harvard University in the US. It has also extended Rs 1 crore for a similar initiative in University of Houston in

Texas

. Efforts are onto set up Tamil chairs in other varsities as well,” the chief minister said, detailing the contributions made by the AIADMK government for promotion of Tamil language.

“Budding scholars, who remain patient and prove their skills, will certainly be rewarded at an appropriate time,” Palaniswami said.

The CM presented Thiruvalluvar award and other awards on the occasion. The recipients of the awards include Nityananda Bharathi (Thiruvallur award), former Union minister Ginjee N Ramachandran (Thanthai Periyar award), K Arjunan (Annal Ambedkar award), K Samarasam (Arignar Anna award), M S Madhivanan (Perunthalaivar Kamarajar award), P Sivaji (Mahakavi Bharathi award), Thenisai Chellappa (Paventhar Bharathidasan award), S Sundararajan (Tamilthendral Thiru Vi Ka award) and Manimekalai Kannan (Muthamizh Kavalar K A P Viswanantham award). Each award carries Rs 1 lakh, a gold medal and a citation.

Chicago Tamil Sangam bagged Tamil Thai award for the year 2019. The award carries Rs 5 lakh and a shield.
