Egmore fertility centre’s opening delayed by 5 months

Chennai: Institute of Obstetrics and Gynaecology’s public fertility centre offering free IVF treatment was to have opened in September. On Thursday, IOG director Dr K Kalaivani said the hospital is still awaiting equipment. Health minister Ma Subramanian said it would be opened by the month-end.In early 2023, Subramanian had said in-vitro fertilization centres offering free treatment would be set up at IOG, Egmore, and Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai. The govt allotted 2.5 crore for each of these centres, aimed a serving the poor who cannot afford the 2.5 lakh and 5 lakh that private assisted reproductive treatment centres in the state charged.At the IOG, at least 100 patients come to the hospital with several issues. “Of the 100, at least 20 are diagnosed with fertility issues, said senior doctors at IOG. Bringing in IVF will improve treatment outcomes,” said a senior doctor.
