Elderly woman dies after assault by drunk grandson
Chennai: A 94-year-old woman died after she was assaulted by her grandson in an inebriated state at a village near Kalpakkam in Chengalpet district.
The deceased was identified as P Saroja, of Poonthandalam village near Vengappakkam. She was living with her son Munusamy and his family.
According to police, the incident occurred when Saroja was resting on a cot outside her house. Police said that due to her advanced age, the woman often spoke to herself. Her grandson, M. Rajesh , 26, returned home in an inebriated state and became irritated by her talking.
During an argument, Rajesh slapped and assaulted Saroja, causing her to collapse unconscious on the spot.
The incident came to light when Saroja’s younger son, Raji, found her lying unconscious and alerted relatives. She was rushed to the hospital and declared dead.
Based on information received, the Sadras police rushed to the spot and arrested Rajesh. Further investigation is on.
